Confederation of Brazilian Football (CBF)

The Confederation of Brazilian Football was founded on 8 June 1914.

First men’s international match

Brazil’s first men’s international was a 3-0 defeat against Argentina in Buenos Aires on 20 September 1914.

CBF joins FIFA

The CBF became a FIFA member in 1923, affiliating as one of four founding CONMEBOL members in 1916.

First FIFA tournament hosting

Brazil hosted the 1950 FIFA World Cup™ finishing as runners-up in front of the largest attendance for a FIFA World Cup match. The tournament returned 64 years later as in 2014.

First FIFA World Cup™ title

Brazil won the 1958 FIFA World Cup™ Final in Sweden for their first world championship with a 17-year-old Pele at the fore. Brazil reprised their victory four years later and won again in 1970 which allowed them to permanently keep the Jules Rimet Trophy.

First FIFA youth tournament win

Brazil won the first of five FIFA U-20 World Cup™ victories at Mexico 1983, reprising the feat in 1985, 1993, 2003 and 2011. Brazil have also won the FIFA U-17 World Cup™ four times (1997, 1999, 2003, 2019).

First women’s international match

Brazil’s first women’s international match was a 2–1 defeat against USA in Jesolo, Italy on 22 July 1986.

First FIFA Futsal World Cup title

Brazil are undisputed kings of the FIFA Futsal World Cup™ having won six editions of the tournament, including the first-ever competition held in the Netherlands in 1989. They subsequently won in 1992, 1996, 2008 (as hosts), 2012 and 2024.

Reclaim FIFA World Cup™

After a drought of 24 years, Brazil beat Italy in the final of the FIFA World Cup™ 1994 to clinch their fourth FIFA World Cup™ triumph.

Most recent FIFA World Cup™ win

After losing to France in the final in 1998, Brazil get redemption by beating Germany in Yokohama, Japan to win their fifth FIFA World Cup™ trophy.

First FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup title

Brazil won the first of six FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup™ titles in 2006, repeating the feat in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2017 and 2024. The nation also hosted the first three editions of the tournament (2005-2007) on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

First FIFA Women’s World Cup Final

A Marta-inspired Brazil reached the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final™ losing to Germany in Shanghai, China PR. Brazil finished third eight years earlier in USA. Brazil have won the silver medal at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament on three occasions (2004, 2008, 2024).

Brazil win first Olympic gold

Captained by Neymar, Brazil won their first Men’s Olympic Football Tournament gold medal in 2016 in what was the first Olympic Games to be held in Brazil. They repeated the triumph at Tokyo 2020 having previously won three silver medals (1984, 1988, 2012) and two bronze medals (1996, 2008).
